SYNOPSIS

ART IN THE EYE OF A NEEDLE

Hard to believe. But true. With sculptures only microscopes can see. It is absolutely mind blowing. You cannot see it with a naked eye. It is a whole universe in an eye of a needle.

"Dr. Willard Wigan MBE was able to develop a unique and impressive way to express himself. It seems a lot of people waste away praying to mystical deities when faced with difficulties, but not Dr. Willard Wigan MBE. This is a man who took the hand he was dealt and painstaking worked to make it better." ~ Havanacus

"As a child with undiagnosed autism and dyslexia, I was ridiculed in class by my teachers and other pupils for not being able to learn to read or write. I was told by school teachers that I would amount to nothing and would achieve nothing. I was used by them to demonstrate what failure would look like for being unable to read or write. I was regularly used as a demonstration of failure to others and was told I would amount to nothing. I desperately wanted to escape the pain of that world, so at the age of five I began sculpting and [making] my own unique world. So from the age of 5, I decided to show the world that nothing does exist and nothing really does matter. I wanted to show the world that nothing meant something and that nothing could be something powerful and amazing. I decided that Just because you couldn’t see something didn’t mean that it did not exist or did not matter. I also considered that if I [made] things that others could not see, then I would not be criticised or ridiculed for my work.

I enter a meditative state in which my heartbeat is slowed, allowing me to reduce hand tremors and sculpt between pulse beats. I use tiny tools that I craft myself from materials such as gold, glass and diamond.

The stress of producing my work causes me to retreat to places of solitude, and to work through the night where there is minimal disruption.

My work has been described as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’, I [make] the worlds tiniest masterpieces. My mom once told me: If you make them smaller your name will get bigger. My work is a reflection of myself, I wanted to show the world that the little things have the biggest impact. At school, I couldn’t express myself and felt like ‘nothing. I wanted to experiment with the world that we can’t see." Just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not there. When you see my work you discover that nothing does exist. For all those that said I would become nothing, take another look and behold at the wonders you will see." ~ Williard Wigan (Micro Sculptor)
